History

In 1859 the Old Jewish Cemetery St. Pölten was opened, one year later a ceremonial hall was built. According to the death files 583 burials took place until the closure in 1906. 1935 the ceremonial hall was demolished and the vacant plot was used as a pasture.

Redesign Project

Since 1968 the Old Jewish Cemetery St. Pölten has been just a lawn area including trees, surrounded by a small wall – just a memorial stone refers to the history of this site, where 583 people were buried.

In 2010 the historians Georg Traska and Christoph Lind came up with a project to bring this forgotten place back to the consciousness of the city. The project focuses on the tombstones, their ritual significance and the chequered history of the cemetery. A funerary monument with all the names will bring the decedents back to collective memory and give the descendants space for remembrance.
